The Nordic island nation of Iceland, which gained its independence from the Danish Crown in 1944, was once thought of as a lonely and desolate place in the North Atlantic Ocean. Today it’s a thriving tourist outpost, located about halfway between the rest of Europe and North America. Reykjavik provides a great stopover for transatlantic travelers to visit Europe’s smallest capital city. If your seeking the exotic, it serves as an ideal stopover between the two destinations for adventure travelers looking to take in the unique beauty of this isolated place. The official language is Icelandic, but most everyone speaks English, just be prepared; because Iceland is so distant and manufactures very few of its own goods, visiting Iceland will be expensive. Regardless the dramatic landscape, natural beauty and friendly locals make surprisingly green Iceland a must do!
